My ReplyHey Rosi!
I get that question all the time! I use everything and anything I find interesting. Acrylic is a basic and daily choice for me.There are no limits though. I experiment with everything that will adhere and is attractive to my eye and goal. I mix my own materials in teeny tiny batches. Sometimes it works great, other times it is a fail. Every rock takes paint differently, so in time I have found what I like. Tell your friend to play with everything. Acrylic paint is the primary base paint that I use. I do not limit myself to acrylic, but it is the best choice for a starter for sure. When I say I experiment with paint, I mean I play with everything! I have been a commercial illustrator, graphic designer and fine artist for over 33 years,so I have many tricks up my sleeve obtained by Experimenting. Tell your friend to play, experiment and have fun! She will find her own style and groove. I know my work looks easy, but I spend way more time than what people realize creating my pieces. Many people are use to art tutorials and being offered a step by step process to achieve a goal. I wish I could offer that because people ask daily. I just make it up every day, that is how I create unique applications. I want every piece to be one of a kind.I think that is the difference in a craft and art. I think a craft is easier to teach. Art has innate qualities that just comes from the creator. I do the same thing with glass and other materials. Your friend might enjoy that process. My Drishti Glass is now in the Oceanside Museum of Art in San Diego, CA. That started with just playing. Drop by my social media, instagram, facebook, Youtube...I post regularly. I have lots of work in a huge range of styles. I just posted some portfolios from the ‘80’s. I have many Books, fine art,Meditation Rocks, glass, graphics.. I have a few posts of me painting. I do not do them in detail because I am a one person operation and it is too hard to work and film. Thank you so much for being such a sweet friend to your friend. I hope this helps inspire her to experiment and play and find the unique style and applications that are hidden within her! Drishti Glass by Julie Ann StricklinMy experimentation with mediums, styles and techniques is practiced with everything I create and on everything I use as my canvas. Glass, rocks, real canvas, paper, bricks, metal, digital techniques and even random containers.
I create my own tools from found objects and from ideas I developed randomly. Little do people realize, all artists do that. Most people think we just use brushes. I know people who just use their fingers and sticks and even the backs of brushes! Their work is always a feast for the eyes! I use sticks, toothpicks, utensils, straws, eyedroppers, feathers, string, wires, and random tools I find.I hand create custom tools to help me achieve certain effects. I even eyeball bamboo sticks from drinks and meals. I escape with them like I just abducted a priceless art tool. One time a friend caught me eye balling a bamboo skewer on both of our plates, he instinctively just said, ”take it!” I laughed because my habits are not as stealthy as they use to be. The Dollar Store is a great resource that people over look. I see fellow artists and friends in the dollar store all the time. I am amazed how their thought process works. A few times I have watched friends when they find products that inspire their creative flow. I am blown away by how their creative spirit recognized a product as a treasure when I walked right past it. Everyone has a special vision and creative flow. I am saddened when people try to repeat what they have seen others do. Time is so limited. Creating unique treasures is a joy. I wish that joy on all creatives. |
Everything is a canvas!I am bare foot most of the time. I have been my whole life, but when I saw these white tennis shoes, I just had to make them a new experiment!
I found some pigments in an art store years prior that I never used, so I thought these shoes would make a great experimentation canvas. Within a few hours I was hooked on painting shoes! I kept these to see how well they stood to daily use. They are amazingly sturdy! I sprayed them with a clear spray I purchased to water proof some Uggs. I am sure it helps, but I really think they would have held up just as well without the spray. I just used it because I have it. I am guessing I used at least 5 different types of paint and at least that many brand on these kicks.I call them “Funky Feet”. Creativity is just play, experimentation and enjoying the process more than the outcome. It is that way for me anyway. |
